NEWNAN Car Owners Ask: Why Do I Need to Change My Serpentine Belt?

Any NEWNAN driver who understands preventive maintenance knows that “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” is bad auto advice. Replacing a part before it breaks is much less costly for NEWNAN residents than repairing the engine damage that comes after a part breaks or fails. A good example of this is the serpentine belt. The serpentine belt gets its name because of its circuitous path around the engine. The serpentine belt is driven by the engine and powers a number of systems, as follows:1. The serpentine belt spins the compressor that generates the cool air for the air conditioning system.2. The serpentine belt powers the alternator. The alternator generates electricity for use in the vehicle's electrical systems and to charge the battery. Without the alternator, the battery wouldn't last more than a few miles.3. In many NEWNAN residents' vehicles, the serpentine belt runs the pumps for both the power steering and the power brakes. In other vehicles, the power steering pump may ... read more

CROSSROADS AUTOMOTIVE Brake Service for Safe Stopping in NEWNAN

Let's talk about something critical for all NEWNAN drivers: your brakes. Your vehicle is heavy, and it takes a lot of muscle to bring it and your passengers to a safe stop – so everything needs to be in good working order. Here's an explanation on how your disc brakes work: The wheel hub keeps your wheel attached to your vehicle. The brake disc – or rotor – is attached to the hub and rotates with the wheel as you drive around NEWNAN. Your brake pads clamp onto the rotor to slow the wheel. The brake caliper straddles the rotor and squeezes the rotor to slow it down. The calipers contain brake pads which press on the rotor when you put your foot on the brake. The brake piston causes the calipers to squeeze and release as you use your vehicle brakes.Your brake pads start to wear the first time you step on the brakes. Eventually the pa ... read more

Have You Checked Your Headlights?

Like everything in the GA automotive market, there have been great strides in headlight technology in recent years. GA drivers can be safer at night because of it. Good headlights improve visibility on NEWNAN roads, enabling you to see farther. They also improve your peripheral vision, helping you to see the sides more clearly. The more you can see, the more quickly you can react to road conditions. This is because nearly half of traffic fatalities take place at night. And as NEWNAN resident population ages, everything that helps older eyes is welcome. Most new vehicles sold in GA come with halogen headlamps. A decade ago, halogens were exotic and expensive. Now that they are standard equipment, the price has come way down. Many luxury cars are equipped with high intensity discharge, or HID, headlamps. You have probably seen them on some NEWNAN roads; they're very bright and have a bluish tint. From behind the wheel, there is no doubt that HID headlamps are the ... read more

NEWNAN Drivers: Is It Time to Replace Your PCV Valve?

NEWNAN Drivers: Is It Time to Replace Your PCV Valve?

The crankcase is the lower part of the engine where the crankshaft is housed and where the engine oil lives. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons that power the engine. When you are diving around NEWNAN, fuel is burned in your vehicle engine, it pushes the pistons down and the crankshaft rotates and sends power to the transmission. Some of the explosive gases from combustion squeeze past the pistons and down into the crankcase. Now this gas is about 70% unburned fuel. If it were allowed to remain in the crankcase, it would contaminate the oil and quickly turn it to sludge. Sludge is like Vaseline and clogs passages in the engine, leading to damage. Also, the pressure build up would blow out seals and gaskets. So in the old days, there was just a hose that vented the crankcase out into the air. Obviously, not good for our air quality in NEWNAN, GA.Enter the PCV valve. It's a small, one-way valve that lets out the gases from the crankcase and routes them back into the air ... read more

Clean Air for Your Engine: Engine Air Filters In NEWNAN

Every NEWNAN car owner who has taken their car in for an oil change has been told that their engine air filter's dirty. Here's what goes into the determination of when to change the filter: First, your vehicle owner's manual will have a recommendation of when the filter should be replaced. Now, most air filters purchased in NEWNAN don't cost a lot to replace. It's just that GA people hate getting caught with an unexpected expense. On the plus side, though, changing a dirty air filter at CROSSROADS AUTOMOTIVE can often save enough on gas to pay for itself before your next oil change in NEWNAN. Think about a dirty furnace filter in your NEWNAN home. When it's all clogged up, enough clean air can't get through. In your vehicle, that means that your engine can't get as much air as it needs to burn the fuel efficiently. So it makes do with less air and has to use more gas to move your vehicle around NEWNAN roads. Your vehicle actually needs about 12,000 times more air tha ... read more
